Show Notes: Jen Brown: "After taking a little break, I headed back to the main stage to check out Green Day. I must say, Green Day put on the absolute best performance of the day. It was very obvious to me that many of the people at the festival were there to see Tre Cool, Mike Dirnt and Billie Joe. The band played upbeat, rock songs from their various albums. The entire show was excellent, however the highlight of their set did not come until the end. The band attempted to end the evening with a song from their major record label debut, DOOKIE, When I Come Around. After finishing the song, a horn and a trombone player came out and played their rendition of the Star Spangled Banner while Tre lit his drums on fire. As the drums burned and the horns played, the crowd swayed and cheered. Finally Billie Joe took the stage again, simply to break into "Time of Your Life." This seemed to me to be the perfect ending to a perfect day, but it was not the end, their was still one more band to see."
Jessica: "Last night on May 29th, 1998, I went to the best concert of my life. It was the Y100 Feztival featuring bands like Everclear, Marcy Playground, Fastball, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and of course, my favorite band of 4 years.. Green Day. This was my second time seeing Green Day, and the first time I didn't get any pictures (since it was my first concert, I was too excited to think), but I made sure that this time I brought a camera with me, a lighter (for "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"), and tons of money to spend on all Green Day merchandise that I didn't already have. Since there was mega traffic getting to the Camden Blockbuster Sony Music Entertainment Centre, I missed the first band, which was Fastball. I
got there around 2:30p.m., but it took a while to find my seat (section C, row 203, seat 19), show my ticket to all the guards, and get searched for any guns (haha). I knew we weren't supposed to have any cameras, so I shoved it down my pants, and luckily no one caught me with it, so I got about 20 pictures of Green Day which will be developed soon. But anyway, the line-up was: Fastball, Marcy Playground, Wyclef Jean, Everclear, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Jeffrey Gaines, Ben Folds Five, Green Day, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies (In that order). I only cared a little bit about Fastball, Marcy Playground, Everclear, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones, but I REALLY cared about Green Day, so I basically walked around most of the concert, waiting for Green Day to come on, which was supposed to happen at around 8:45. I came to the concert wearing huge green pants (it was 85 degree weather, but i needed to sneak my camera in), a Green Day shirt, my face and arms painted with Y100 (you could get backstage passes if you wore Y100 all over you--but i didn't win them), my hair completely green with glitter in it, and a HUGE sign that said on one side: "Y100 You rule" & on the other: "WE LOVE GREEN DAY". Both sides of the poster were painted with glow and the dark paint over top of the crayons that I colored the letters in with, so when it was dark outside, you could still read what the poster said. To kill some time, I bought a Y100 Feztival t-shirt, a styrophome hand with a middle finger sticking up that said "Green Day" & on the other side it said "nimrod", and some weird kind of fisherman hat or something that had the dookie logo of Green Day on it (which was green). And see, there was this walkway between where the seats were and where the lawn started, and where the lawn started, it was elevated and there was a fence or something blocking it in the front, so people would stand up there and ask for the people on the walkway to slap them 5. So, since I was walking around with my friends with the "WE LOVE GREEN DAY" sign showing all these people would scream from the top of the lawn at the fence "We love Green Day, too, they rule!" I swear, about 20 people did that who were on the lawn, and I slapped them 5 every time. And when we were walking around to these stands that sold things, I would hold the sign up and people would start going like, "yeah!! green day rocks!" Then, when Ben Folds Five was on(the band before Green Day), it was like the everlasting band. I swear, it was like hell listneing to them because I knew Green Day was comming up right after them. After waiting and waiting, Ben Folds Five was finally over and there was a 20 minute wait before Green Day so they could set up Green Day's stuff. After about 10 minutes of staring at the guys set up Green Day's stuff, the Green Day Nimrod logo banner flopped down, and everyone started cheering. I even heard people on the lawn start cheering "Green Day! Green Day! Green Day!" Then about 10 minutes after that, the lights dimmed and huge beams of green
was shown on the stage, and everyone cheered again. About 2 minutes later, horns started playing, and Green Day came on stage and people cheered SOOOO loud. The first song they played was "Nice Guys Finish Last" and then "Hitchin' a Ride". I got lots of pictures of them for those first 2 songs. I got on my friend's shoulders and got pictures, too, and I held up the sign. I KNOW Billie Joe saw it becuase he was looking RIGHT at it! But anyway, after they performed "Hitchin' a RIde", Billie Joe went on a curse attack, and I don't even remember what he said. He might have said something like asking us if we were having a good time. There were these people dressed up in costumes.. I couldn't tell what one of them was, but the other was a bee, I think. And the bee was the horn player for "King For A Day" I
think. I think after "Hitchin' a Ride", Billie Joe played something from Insomniac, I really don't remember. During one song, I think it was "Knowledge", Billie Joe asked if anyone in the audience could play guitar (he did this for the Philladelphia concert on November 17, 1997) and some guy said that he could, so Billie Joe got this guy up on stage to play some guitar chords-- he actually was really good! Then, after the song was over, Billie Joe asked what the guy's name was, and he said "Mike." Then Billie Joe said "Do you want to stage dive?" and Mike (Not Mike Dirnt, hehe) said, "I don't know." Then Billie Joe said, "Well, you don't have a fucking choice, now do you?" Then Billie Joe had the audience chant, "Mike! Mike! Mike! Mike!" and Mike stage dove into the mosh pit. After that, Billie Joe played a couple songs, including "King For a Day." During the part where he says "King for a day -- in a leather thong," Billie Joe took off his pants, and he was wearing a leather thong!!! It was so funny, because me and all the other girls in the audience were screaming so loud. Then, he'd go to the right side of the stage and pretend he was taking the thong off, but then he'd put it back on again, and he'd do the same thing on the left side. You couldn't see anything, though. He only put it down like a centimeter on the side. Then for about one song he was wearing that thong and a black shirt, but his guitar was covering the thong. Then the next to last song, Billie Joe held out the last note while Tre Cool dumped a liquid ( I think it was water ) onto his drumset, and lit a match and it went up in flames. This was after he took it apart and threw it all into one pile. Then Mike Dirnt threw his bass in the fire, too. Then that guy dressed up as a bee and Green Day started throwing water all over the audience. Then Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt walked off stage, and Billie Joe performed "Time of Your Life." I got my lighter out and so did like 100 others. After the song was over, Tre and Mike came back out and Tre took off his shirt and threw it in the audience. Then they just left the stage and it was over. Many people left after Green Day did, including myself and my friends, becuase everyone knew that the Cherry Poppin' Daddies couldn't top that performance by Green Day. As my friends and I were waiting for our ride, we would ask strangers comming out of the concert if they wanted some popcorn (we didn't want anymore), and tehy'd say "yes." Then we'd say, "only if you're a Green Day fan," and they'd go, "Hell yeah." Then we'd go into a whole conversatoin about how Green Day was the best band there with total strangers. We did this about three times. It was pretty cool. Only one person said to me that Green Day sucks, out of like 20,000, and you know what I did? I shoved that hand with the middle finger sticking up that said "Green Day" right in their fucking face. Green Day really was the best band there, and I hope to see them for the third time sometime soon. "
