Show Notes: (Louder Sound) - Green Day fans were left heartbroken as the band pulled the plug on their scheduled appearance at London's Electric Ballroom tonight (Friday).

Just a day after the punk heroes performed a surprise show for around 100 fans at the Marquis pub in Covent Garden, they were due to perform at the Electric Ballroom in Camden.

The show was part of the band's intimate Hella Tiny tour, with the 1200-capacity Electric Ballroom a far cry from the venues they are used to playing.

But with fans already lining up outside, Green Day announced via a social media post that the gig would not go ahead.

On X (formerly Twitter), they said: "London, unfortunately tonight’s show has been cancelled due to an unexpected illness.

"We're truly bummed about this and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Ticket refunds will be processed automatically next week. We’ll see you back again on The Saviors Tour if not sooner."

The trio was scheduled to perform May 29 at Moscow prior to their European tour in June. However, the band wrote Sunday on their Instagram Stories, “With heavy hearts, in light of current events we feel it is necessary to cancel our upcoming show in Moscow at Spartak Stadium.”

“We are aware that this moment is not about stadium rock shows, it’s so much bigger than that,” Green Day continued. “But we also know that rock and roll is forever and we feel confident there will be a time and a place for us to return in the future. Show Notes: (The Guardian) - Green Day have cancelled a scheduled appearance in Glasgow because of bad weather, just hours before they had been due on stage. Organisers said they had been forced to call off the outdoor concert in Bellahouston Park on Tuesday after heavy rain.

The American band’s members said they were “distraught” at having to pull out of the gig, as they have previously played in “extreme weather conditions” during the rest of their European tour.

Like the saying goes, you can take the boys outta punk, but you can't take the punk outta the boys. In a move that appears to have caught the band's label off guard, Green Day pulled out of their opening slots for the Rolling Stones. "They wanted those gigs, they actively went after them. I don't know what went wrong," a Reprise source said.
Official word from Green Day's publicist at the Mitch Schneider Organization, however, was that Green Day dropped off the shows – which were to occur on Feb. 9 and 11 in Anaheim, Calif., Feb. 15 in Minneapolis, Feb. 19 in Milwaukee and Feb. 22 in Detroit – because they wanted to work on the follow-up to 1997's platinum-selling Nimrod. Interestingly, the Reprise source mentioned nothing of the irreverent trio's reported plans to enter a studio any time soon.
Green Day's publicity firm has not sent out a press release on the matter, attributing the delay to MSO's desire "to add the producer's name, instead of saying they haven't determined who it will be, if they have." Which, in simpler terms, could mean that Green Day aren't planning to use Rob Cavallo, the former Reprise A&R man who produced their last three albums. "Not so," said a source close to the Green Day camp. "I understand Rob will produce the next record, and is due to go into the studio to do some roughs. They are not going in to record their next album yet. They're just going in to work out some ideas and put them on tape."
If they happen to have second thoughts, the Bay Area punkers might have a chance to kiss and make-up with Mick and the boys. The Stones reportedly will arrive in San Francisco a week before the kick-off of their latest North American tour, which is due to start at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, Calif., on Jan. 25.

The Stones' European fan club postulated yesterday (Jan. 12) that the band would rehearse for the shows in either San Francisco or Vancouver, B.C., where a new arena stage for the upcoming No Security tour is currently being constructed at the Pacific Coliseum. But late last night, crews were seen unloading equipment into San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, despite the fact that there are no shows scheduled until Jan. 28. When queried, one of the workmen replied, "I don't know who is playing, we're just loading stuff in." A veteran scene watcher says that the band is rehearsing on Treasure Island, a former naval base in the middle of San Francisco Bay, which once housed interned Japanese prisoners during World War II. To further confuse fans, the Rolling Stones newsgroup posted an item yesterday noting that the band has been rehearsing at the Pacific Coliseum for the past three days and will continue ironing out the kinks until the weekend.
As for Green Day's vacated slots, Bryan Adams will take over in Anaheim, Johnny Lang will perform in his hometown of Minneapolis, and Wide Mouth Mason will pick up the slack in Detroit and Milwaukee.

Green Day Fans were literally blown away before the band had a chance to play a note. They're now back in a California studio mixing their latest album.
Day One of the festival went on as scheduled on Saturday until Rosie hit the stage full force about the same time as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their set was cut short and the festival called it a night. The next day it was clear the site was devastated and the rest of the program was canceled, leaving Green Day idle. The band joined members of the Chili Peppers, the Foo Fighters, Beck and The Prodigy on an excursion to an amusement park."

Negotiations aimed at moving the show to nearby Lakeland Civic Center had all but fallen apart Thursday, according to area promoter Dave Hundley. "Right now, it looks like the band is more willing to add a show to an already sold-out date in Fort Lauderdale," said Hundley, whose locally based No Clubs Presents company planned to promote the bay area concert. According to state officials, the price of doing business with Green Day last year proved too high. "The Florida State Fair is not in the business of bringing in events that have a likely potential for disruption and damage," said Terry McElroy, spokesman for the Department of Agriculture. Most of the hall's hefty repair bill came from fixing damage to bleachers erected for the show, said Fred Brown, director of operations at the Florida Expo Park fairgrounds site. Though the band forked over about $20,000 for repairs, the Fair Authority still paid the remaining costs, McElroy said. Green Day are back from Europe and are spending a few days cooling their heels in their adopted hometown of Berkeley, California before they begin their swing through the Pacific Northwest and Canada beginning October 16 in Portland, Oregon. Our Berkeley correspondent, Hayley Kaufman, spotted bassist Mike Dirnt this past weekend at a "Mobilize To Legalize" rally in San Francisco. Kaufman said he was trying to keep a low-profile, and acting "really mellow". But that didn't stop her from approaching him and saying "Hey, Mike". He turned around looking a little unnerved and inquired "You know who I am?" She answered "Yeah," a little surprised at his response. No further words were spoken and Dirnt disappeared in a how-you-say, puff of smoke. Green Day's "Insomniac" will be released next week.

Green Day Tour Possibly Postponed
Equipment problems might be hindering the kick-off of Green Day's North American tour due to begin on October 16 in Portland. Since the group is taking all their equipment with them on this tour, (and we mean everything) they may not have enough time to gather every little mic stand and guitar pick, so they're threatening to blow off Portland and Seattle. When ATN called Green Day's record label, they said they couldn't substantiate the rumor, but then they didn't deny it either.

Still, there was plenty on Monday to distract fans between six-packs and long waits at the Porta-Johns. More than a dozen bands played, among them L7, The Breeders, Smashing Pumpkins, Nick Cave and George Clinton.

As in past years, activists staffed info-booths on drugs, abortion and the rain forests. Poets held court in the "spoken word" revival tent, where festival organizer Perry Farrell of the rock bands Jane's Addiction and Porno For Pyros, slipped in for an unannounced set.

Colorful souvenir shacks offered "hemp seeds" (a snack, not a drug) and marijuana pipes sold as "tobacco equipment."There were also tie-dye shirts, crocheted caps, velvet pants, shawls and love beads at prices from $10 to $30.

Scorched fans drank from trough-like fountains and were spritzed by cool water in the "rain tents."The backwash turned the field to mud, much like Woodstocks I and II.

It was the original Woodstock in 1969 that inspired Farrell to create Lollapalooza in 1991, with the idea that alternative music and counterculture deserved a touring showcase.

Blue-haired Alicia Cannizzo, 19, of Coral Springs, said this fourth Lollapalooza was "a little more corporate," than the first she attended in 1991, pointing to a slew of Budweiser signs. "But it's still pretty cool."
Vendors had a captive audience at prices that ranged from $4 for bottled water to $5 for a burrito. With admission, parking, a couple of meals and souvenirs, organizers figure most people spent between $75 and $100 for the day. Last year, the tour grossed $17 million.

"It's too expensive," said Rob Lamb, 16, of Coral Springs. "It's not really what I thought it would be."

Lollapalooza: Where Moments Are Made, So Long As It Doesn't Rain
As we gear up for the 2010 fest, Bigger Than the Sound looks back at the Lolla show that never was.

Earlier this week, a music-obsessed buddy of mine IM'ed me with a hypothetical question: "If you could attend any concert in history, what would it be?"

The default answer, of course, seemed to be Woodstock. After all, it was arguably the most monumental musical event of the 20th century (and there were plenty of drugs too). Amadeus' 1784 Trattnerhof concerts probably would've been pretty great to see. Kool Herc's late-'70s "back-to-school" parties in the rec room of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx, too (since, you know, that's where he perfected "the break" and inadvertently created hip-hop). The Wattstax concert at the L.A. Coliseum in 1972. The Talking Heads/ Ramones double-bill at CBGBs in 1975. U2 at Red Rocks in 1983. Nirvana at Reading in 1992. The list goes on and on.

Anyway, I said Woodstock. But then I thought about it for a while, and I changed my mind. I mean, sure, it would've been great to be there, to frolic in the mud and watch Hendrix blast "The Star-Spangled Banner" on a Monday morning. But, to be honest, Woodstock is sort of the "rock critic" answer. If I really could've attended any concert in history, it probably would've been the August 16, 1994, Lollapalooza date at the Volusia County Fairgrounds in Deland, Florida. Mostly because it never happened.

See, back in the summer of '94, I was a 15-year-old kid just starting to fall in love with music. The Breeders' Last Splash album had a lot to do with that, and they were on the Lolla bill that year, along with heavyweights like the Smashing Pumpkins and the Beastie Boys, curiosities (at least for me) like George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars and A Tribe Called Quest, the legendary Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and a little band called Green Day, who were just starting to make waves. None of those bands ever came to Orlando, or, if they did, I wasn't old enough to see them. Needless to say, Lollapalooza was shaping up to be the music event of the Central Florida summer. I had gone to Lolla the previous summer, had gotten kicked in the head during Rage Against the Machine's set, and had become a man. I couldn't wait to see what would happen this year. And then, a few days before the show, I had watched — on MTV — as Billie Joe Armstrong and company engaged in an epic mud fight with the crowd at Woodstock '94, which only added more mystique to the Lollapalooza bill. This was shaping up to be the greatest day of my life.

But on August 16 (and, as I recall, the day before, too), it rained. A lot. Still, I figured that the show would go on — and, given the sloppy conditions, a mud fight with Green Day seemed all but certain — but then, as my friends and I were getting ready to head out to the fairgrounds (one of our pals had his license and a car), they made the announcement on the radio: Lollapalooza had been canceled.

I remember all of us standing around our friends' car, packs of cigarettes in our pockets, not really knowing what to do or say. Surely, this was a joke. Didn't the tickets say "Rain or Shine"? But then, we called Ticketmaster and a pre-recorded message informed us that the show was, in fact, canceled due to "inclement weather," and that refunds were available at point of purchase. We were all so crushed that we never bothered getting our money back. I still have my Lolla '94 ticket stuffed away in a desk drawer. To this day, it remains the greatest show I have never seen.

Who knows what would've happened that day? What memories was I robbed of? How would my life have been different had I seen the Pumpkins at the height of their powers, or the Breeders when Jim MacPherson and Josephine Wiggs were still in the band? These all seem like fairly stupid questions, but I still think them, even today, as a 31-year-old who has seen every band on the bill many times since then. Lollapalooza 1994 haunts me. It probably always will. I wish more than anything that I had gotten to see the show.
But after thinking about things for a while, I'm filled with another emotion: hope. It may be too late for me — since, like I said, I am 31 and have seen pretty much everything there is to see, music-wise. But there are millions of kids out there who have Lollapalooza circled on their calendars (or iCalendars or whatever), kids who can't wait to see the bands they loved, or get kicked in the head, or get ushered into adulthood. It's pretty much what makes Lolla so great: It is where moments happen, where memories are made. And so, as I head off to cover the 2010 edition of the fest, I'm trying to remember all that, trying to not be the cynical old rock journo I am most days. I am trying to be 15 again, to channel the roller coaster of emotions I had in the days leading up to Lollapalooza 1994. Because there are always going to be kids out there who are praying it doesn't rain. Let's hope the Rock Gods are listening.

Between the two of us we had 6 copies of Dookie (one for each car, one for each bedroom and one for our portable cd players). It was OUR record, they were OUR band. Then we get the news, Green Day would be performing in Miami on Lollapalooza! There was nothing that was going to keep us from seeing our favorite band from the front row. So we quickly devised our strategy. This might be a good point to state that it was the summer before our senior year in high school and both of us were still 16 - and downtown Miami at that time was not exactly the safest place to be. FAST FORWARD TO DAY OF SHOW! Knowing how excited we were to see Green Day, there had to be people just like us so we would need to beat them to the front of the line. So, even though gates did not open until noon (or was it 1PM?) we decided to arrive at Bicentennial Park at 6AM. Success, we were the first ones there! The gates wont open for another 6-7 hours - who cares! Food or drinks? Who needs them! We were on our Green Day adrenaline. We sat there trying to guess their set list - we made our own top 10 list of our favorite GD songs - we listened to Dookie another 3 or 4 times. We were having a blast! FAST FORWARD TO OPENING OF THE GATES! Yes, we were first in line. I let Tanya in before me because, well a gentleman always lets the lady in first. But once we passed that gate it was an all out sprint to front and center of the main stage. There we were - minutes away from finally seeing them live! Things are happening on stage. Wait is that Billy Joe I see just off the side of the stage? Any minute now... OMG here he comes!!! but wait where is the rest of the band? What did he just say? Something about the band being unable to play? Mike was injured at Woodstock? They will be back soon?!? But we were here since 6AM all for you!! We were drained. Time to get out of the pit. Security! It was an unspoken gesture. Look a security guard in the eyes and throw up your arms and they would pluck you out of the crowd. So out Tanya and I go and we sit down against the side fence along the main stage. We must have sat there for at least an hour without a word spoken. I could not even tell you what band was playing on stage - we were bummed. Tanya looks at me and says well since he was on stage he or they have got to still be here and we want to meet him. So now I get to the part of the story I still like to shake my head at - between the two of us we had $120 cash on us. So 10 minutes and $120 later we were back stage looking for Green Day. If we weren't going to see them perform maybe we can meet them! But wait there weren't any names on the trailers. We literally went from trailer to trailer. We must have knocked on 20 doors before we were politely asked to leave by security and were escorted out. Unfortunately our desire to see Green Day at Lollapalooza that day ended up a bust - there were several lingering and noteworthy things that happened that day - 1) Tanya and I bonded in a way that made us lifelong friends - we still regularly talk even though we life on opposite sides of the country. 2)This is the first concert I ever took photos at. I smuggled my Minolta 35mm. Since then I have been a professional concert photographer. While it would be another 2 years until I actually got a photo pass (Lollapalooza 1996) through a publication, 17 years and 1,600 concerts I still get a thrill at each show. Attached is a photo of Tanya and I once we got home late that night. Yes, I was exhausted. (side note - winning this contest would be a dream because I would actually be at a concert as a fan and not working. Actually get to enjoy the whole thing! and yes, I am entering this contest as a fan and not for press access) Finally, my other option for a Lollapalooza story was going to be the 1992 show - one of the best concerts I ever saw - but the biggest memory was that the day after the show Miami was hit by hurricane Andrew and while we lost our house - the one thing that I took with me was my Lollapalooza 1992 ticket stub. Everything else I owned was destroyed.)"

From what I recall, Green Day was supporting Bad Religion on this Recipe for Hate tour, but for whatever reason, Bad Religion chose to take a day off and skip this one. Show was still huge. Hunter Oswald: "They played a tiny place in Tampa sometime around '90 and I wasn't able to go. (I don't remember why.) When I moved to Los Angeles, I was so fucking stoked that we were playing together at the Whiskey. Then the injury made them cancel. And I was so fucking bummed. I've still never seen them. I still really want to. Now I've got a daughter who does, too."

Show Notes: The Daily Cougar: "Last spring Green Day was scheduled to play a date at Fitzgerald's two days before Austin's South By Southwest music conference but the show was cancelled abruptly amid rumors that bassist Mike had broken both arms by either a car crash or a freak basketball accident."

Show Notes: Nathan Beaver: "I remember that Green Day show that was canceled because Mike hit his head on something and knocked himself out."

Andrew Bely: "My band, Spread, had the honour to play there once. We were to open for Green Day but they canceled as their bassist had hurt his head on a goal post that day. 7 people showed up after the news got around."

Stephen Seigel: "The Downtown Performance Center hosted about 800 performances in its four-and-a-half year existence. Every show welcomed people of all ages; every show was alcohol-free, and nearly every show had an admission under five dollars. And while Eye was catering to an underground audience for most of these shows, he cites the fact that many of the artists that played there went on to become platinum-selling acts. 'Bands like Green Day would be sleeping in my basement one day,' he remembers, 'and then the next day they're signing multi-million dollar contracts. Everything just transformed; that's the way it goes.'"

Brian McDonald: "...Mike ran into a pole headfirst (I think it was a silly little pillow fight with his girlfriend which was the cause of it) and fell on his elbows. After bleeding profusely, he went to the hospital and got stitches for his forehead and casts for both arms which had been broken. Because of that, the band has cancelled all their upcoming shows."

Billie Joe Armstrong: "In Irvine, California, Mike's girlfriend was having a pillow fight and, uh, Mike lost. Mike went right into a pole, had six stitches in his head, a whiplash, one broken arm and one sprained elbow. ...We were on tour and Mike and his girlfriend we're having a pillow fight, just joking around like crazy couples do, and he ran backwards straight into a pole and he fell really weird,' says Billie Joe. 'He broke his arm, sprained his elbow, he had six stitches in his head, and he had whiplash. We did get a good song out of it called Pulling Teeth, though.'"

Show Notes: subCCultured: "The Krayons play the tune 'Non-Existent Headlines' before a particularly rowdy crowd in Corpus Christi, Texas on Jan. 5, 1993. The Krayons were one of the three bands set to open for Green Day that night. However, Green Day opted to postpone their performance due to illness, which resulted in a de facto headlining slot for The Krayons to a full room of fans who had paid to see Green Day."

Show Notes: Metalhit: "Ventura had a venue which was great had a half pipe inside but eventually the beach nazis had to kill it, there was a wild shooting at a Green Day gig of all things."

Ventura County Reporter: "There were lots of shows at the Mayfair. The shows were well-attended, but times were different. There were lots of gangs/skinheads making some shows kind of scary. All the bands that were going to be huge in a few more years played at the Mayfair: NOFX, Pennywise, The Offspring all had shows there. There was the infamous Green Day riot when a gang got kicked out of the show, came back, busted through the back door and started hitting people with pipes, ending the show before Green Day played."

The Sound Alarm: "Another one of our most memorable back stage moment was when we supported Green Day on Christmas Eve and the bill was stacked with names like Strung Out, Jughead's Revenge & yours truly [Citizen Down]. Throughout the night fights were breaking out. We could hear them from backstage, and you can just smell the tension in the air. We finally hit the stage and by the 3rd song a brawl broke out and we stopped so they could gather themselves. So we start playing again and the crowd starts getting into our music, then I look to my left and only see guys with pipes and crowbars! So I turn for one second to signal the band and to my surprise when I looked back they were beating people with these pipes! Shortly after that, we heard gunshots outside and then sirens. Needless to say, the show was over. Green Day and Jughead's Revenge were bummed they didn't get to play, thanks to 'The Rumble on Christmas Eve.'"

Show Notes: Oak Leaf: "Despite the disappointment of the crowd in the Coop patio Wednesday, Doctor Obvious replaced scheduled band. Green Day. With dual drums, a strong bass line and an almost non-existant guitar track, Doctor Obvious was a high energy, spirited band, who drew a small following. The fourth song of the set had an edge unseen in any of the previous songs, implementing the use of a synthesizer and a suddenly audible guitar."

the Observer: "So, when I lived in Albuquerque, it would've been 1992 when this happened. Dookie hadn't come out yet. They came to town and played a show at a little punk venue, and fire marshal showed up and shut it down before they could play. So, one of my friends approaches me and says, 'By any chance do you have any of that weed left?' I was like, 'Yeah, I do.' 'Well, Billie is looking for some.' ... So, myself and Billie, and friend Lisa drive back to my house and she just dropped us off for a second or something. She stayed in the car. I remember she didn't come in. She thought it was going to be a quick run-in, get a little weed and head back out. So we're sitting there and he decides to light up a little bit, and, you know, take a toke. We start talking about punk rock. Berkeley, you know, 'cause Subvert had played down there not that long ago. When I just met them. And when I said 'Subvert', he goes, 'What? Subvert? No way! That was the first show I've ever saw.' The first show Billie Joe said he ever saw was Subvert / Neurosis / Christ On Parade and I think it was Half Off. I was like, 'Wow, man. That's cool.' I mean, that was a really memorable show at the Gilman Street."

Brian MacDonald: "Green Day had a promoter who booked shows without the band's permission. ... This could have very well been the same situation."

Neil Robinson: "Green Day was one that I booked and then they didn't show up. They had approached us, and I guess their booking agent had booked three shows on the same day and picked which would be the most popular and didn't tell us. I remember us getting together and I said 'that band's never gonna play in this state again.' [laughs]"

Show Notes: Shaun Cowan: "The first time Green Day came to Edmonton they played 2 shows; first show was Sunday matinee/all ages at the Bronx and an acquaintance booked this show for a couple days later. This person didn't have the best reputation, so I helped him with shows to ensure that bands got paid and that flyers were put up. When the band arrived they weren't happy about the show being 18+ and that the bar was a strip club on the days we didn't have shows. They were cool to me about the situation and an all ages show was quickly put together at the Ritz Diner, just down the road. The roadie for GD on this tour was Aaron Cometbus, and I was quite excited to meet him and buy a zine. ...The Ritz show was so tiny, not a lot of people."

Show Notes: Although a No Alternative/Dick And Jane CD recorded at this show claims to have bonus tracks of Green Day's set, Green Day instead played a show at John Haynes Memorial Veterans Hall in Garberville, and the tracks in question are actually from a May 25th, 1990 recording.
